Tribe dump Blue Jays

Rookie Merritt delivers

The Cleveland Indians took matters into their own hands and delivered the knockout punch to the punch drunk Toronto Blue Jays and they did it with Rookie Ryan Merritt was the one delivering the blows.

indians-6The 24-year old lefty shut down the once high flying Blue Jays in game five before taking a bow in the fifth inning.  The rookie fanned 10 batters, allowed two hits in 4 1/3rd innings and looked like a veteran out there.

“I know they were counting on me,” Merritt said. “Before the game, they came and told me they had my back, everybody had my back, good or bad. So that takes some pressure off, and I just went out there and pitched and trusted my team.”

The Tribe now await the winner of the NLCS between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs.  They could use the time recuperate for a few days, especially the pitching staff which have been hampered with injuries, especially Trevor Bauer who is still nursing an injured pinkie finger.

Tribe gives one up to Jays

Series now at 3-1

The Cleveland Indians had their playoff winning streak come to an end last night when the Toronto Blue Jays finally showed some life as Josh Donaldson homered in the third inning off of Corey Kluber.

indians-5“It’s an uphill battle,” Donaldson said. “We’re still down three games to one. It’s a must-win each and every game. But the fact of the matter is we’ve got to go out there and continue to control what we can control. I felt like we did that for the better half of today, and we’ve got to go out there and do it again tomorrow.”

The Blue Jays will be sending Marco Estrada (9-9, 3.48 ERA) for game 5 of the ALDS while the Indians will be sending out rookie phenom Ryan Merritt (1-0, 1.64 ERA) who got his first ever start on September 30th where he allowed one run on three hits spread over five innings for a 7-2 win.
